Pre-Election Manifesto Launch - 10th July 2023

Just when we thought our politics could not sink any lower, today we witness the Conservative Party is in a state of all-out war, as Rishi Sunak and Boris Johnson continue to trade insults in their extraordinary bust-up over the events leading up to Boris Johnson’s dramatic resignation and his Honours List.

Government by diktat

In Parliament today, the Conservatives continue their assault on our democracy and our right to protest. A few weeks ago, the Government lost a vote in the House of Lords on the Public Order Bill when they tried to change the interpretation of "serious disruption" to mean "anything more than minor".

They are now trying to reinsert this change via secondary legislation, which has little Parliamentary scrutiny and can't be amended in any way. Baroness Jenny Jones is tabling an ancient tool called a fatal motion to stop their proposal from becoming law, but without Labour's support, it will fail.

This means that for the first time ever, the Executive will use Henry VIII powers to overturn a parliamentary vote against a new law. It sets a precedent where a government can lose votes in Parliament, when trying to pass legislation, then simply have the same laws waved through as regulations. This undermines our whole representative parliamentary democracy and allows government by diktat.

Amidst these constitutional crises, including Boris Johnson telling the Express today "and as the great Arnold Schwarzenegger said, I'll be back" (possibly alongside Nigel Farage), it is urgent that we strengthen our democracy. The old ways of doing politics have failed us, leaving behind a trail of broken promises, scandals, distrust, and a growing sense of disillusionment.

At the True & Fair Party, we refuse to accept this as the status quo. We are the voice of change, and we won't rest until our democracy works for the people.
